Instructor-Led Workshop: Annual Performance Discussions

An immersive workshop blending instructor-led discussions and learner participation with an emphasis on storytelling and learner experience. This session contributed to a 20% increase in employee engagement scores.

Business Need

As we embraced a 100% remote work environment, business leaders began to notice a shift in company culture and employee engagement.  Our annual employee engagement survey confirmed a drop in engagement, particularly around employee development. At the same time, quiet quitting had become a movement across the workforce and we could not afford to lose valued staff.

Solution

L&D partnered with HR to determine the most effective ways to train our managers to engage with their employees. After completing our scholarly research, we established a training plan for annual performance reviews provided to our leadership staff. The plan was anchored to demonstrating employee value and two-way conversations.

Creation & Delivery

A two-hour workshop was led by HR with managers at all levels. The attached PowerPoint guided our presenters while a Resource Kit was provided with technical instructions and useful coaching tips.


Engagement activities were utilized throughout the session to demonstrate value to our learners:

  • Managers with proven success in employee development were featured. Each presented unique stories and style to encourage creative yet effective ways of reaching employees.
  • Current-day examples were used to demonstrate employee opinions and trends, such as a popular TikTok content creator who publishes quirky videos on company cultures that encourage quiet quitting.
  • Conversation prompts throughout invited learners to provide their thoughts, feedback, and experiences.
  • Break-out rooms were utilized to practice using a scripted scenario. 

Results

This session was a resounding success, in terms of the skills we developed with our managers and the impact on employee relations.

  • In our Level 1 survey, 98% of managers responded favorably to the quality of information and usefulness of the workshop.
  • After annual reviews, 92% of employees reported satisfaction with the time their manager took with their reviews.
  • Additionally, 96% of employees reported satisfaction with the quality of feedback their managers provided - a 20% increase over our employee engagement survey. This was a 6% better than results from leaders in our industry, according to data from Best Place to Work .
